The atelier will focus on Purcell’s opera Dido et Aeneas with all participants invited to make their own contribution to the music through improvisation, exploring composition using the passacaglia technique and/or mask and set design. The workshop will run by composer Jovanka Trbojevic and artist Raija Malka. The participants will be split into two groups: 7-15-year-olds and 15 years and older. The workshops will take place 11:00-15:00, daily from 13 to 17 June, with a lunch break from 12:30-13:00. Participants are welcome to bring their own lunch or pop out to one of the many cafés on Suomenlinna Island.
The course will conclude on Sunday 19 June at 14:00 with a CONCERT AND MASKED BALL, hosted by New York City-based Thomas Baird.

A picnic hosted by count Anckarbjelke (actor Joachim Wigelius) and his cousin Sofie af Dunkelflykt (actor Sari Havas) will feature a programme of philopsophy and music from the George Washington-era United States of North America, which recently gained their independence.

Helsinki’s Savonlinna Island is playing host to three heroes, recently returned from the American War of Independence: the Finnish Count Curt von Stedingk (Osmo Pekonen), his aide-de-camp Johan Sténstjerna (Johan Stén) officier Achard Bonvouloir (actor Paul Spera) from France who fought alongside Marquis de La Fayette.
The audience will be treated to stories of George Washington, Count Axel von Fersen and Marquis La Fayette’s experiences in battle and invited to explore the philosophical movements that ultimately gave rise to the American Revolution, the new concept of democracy as well as human rights and tolerance.
The international Les Lumières orchestra (including REBEL ensemble with Hannu Vasara and Mervi Kinnarinen, violin, Antto Vanhala, viola, Lea Pekkala, cello, Eberhard Maldfeld, double bass, Jasu Moisio and Veli-Pekka Portaankorva, oboe,
Annu Salminen, horn and Jaakko Lindfors, percussion) as soloists Meri Siirala and Päivi Kantola, soprano, Waltteri Torikka and Sampo Haapaniemi, baryton, Jussi Salonen, tenor will perform excerpts from Pierre Alexandre Monsigny’s opera Le Déserteur.

The Washington Assembly, given by Count Anckarbjelke (actor Joachim Wigelius) and Baroness Sofie af Dunkelflykt (actor Sari Havas) will be attended by Monsieur Pierre Landrin Duport, dance master to George Washington and Madame Duport (baroque dancers Thomas Baird and Paige Whitley-Bauguess from New York City) as well as officer Ahcard de Bonvouloir (actor Paul Spera from Paris). The guests of honour will share stories of George Washington’s inner circle, cultural life in America and the philosophy of French dance. The CONCERT programme will feature Jean-Féry Rebel's ballet Les caractères de la danse and his Les éléments series, with music by Pierre Gabriel Buffardin, Antonio Vivaldi, Raynor Taylor, James Hewitt, John Antes and Johann Friedrich Peter.
Music will be performed by the New York-based REBEL baroque ensemble, comprising Jörg-Michael Schwarz, violin, and Karen Marie Marmer, violin,
Thomas Rink, violin and viola, John Moran, cello, Matthias Maute, flute and Dongsok Shin, harpsicord as well as Soile Ylivuori, flute, Jasu Moisio and Veli-Pekka Portaankorva, oboe, Jaakko Luoma, bassoon, Hannu Vasara and Mervi Kinnarinen, violin, Antto Vanhala, viola and Eberhard Maldfeld, double bass.
In the BALL starting around 9 p.m. Monsieur Pierre Landrin Duport and his wife will teach the audience the american country dances Jefferson and Liberty (ie Thomas Jefferson), Irish Wash Woman, Soldier's Joy , Yankee Doodle and french dances Bon Amitie, La Bergere, Happy Meeting (Cotillion)

The concert will showcase music created at the Purcell workshop under the guidance of composer Jovanka Trbojevic and artist Raija Malka, performed by the workshop participants and the REBEL Baroque ensemble.
Hannu Vasara and Mervi Kinnarinen violin, Eberhard Maldfeld, double bass and sopranos Meri Siirala and Päivi Kantola will be performing extracts from Purcell’s opera Dido and Aeneas.
The ball will be hosted by Monsieur Pierre Landrin Duport, dance master to George Washington (Baroque dancer Thomas Baird from New York City), ably and graciously assisted by our own dance master Monsieur de Mont Walnut.

Baroness Sofie af Dunkelflykt (actor Sari Havas), newly settled in France, will be hosting a salon inspired by Parisian scientists and husband and wife pair Antoine and Marie Paulze Lavoisier. She will be joined by her guests Count Curt von Stedingk (Osmo Pekonen), his aide-de-camp Johan Stenstierna (Johan Stén) and officer Achard de Bonvouloir´n (actor Paul Spera) to discuss the many fascinating visitors who frequented the Lavoisier’s salons, including Benjamin Franklin, their scientific experiments conducted in Paris in the 1770s and 1780s as well as the controversial Frans Mesmer. Henry Mondain, a Finnish scientist from the city of Turku (Inspirator Harri Montonen, Heureka Finnish Science Centre) has brought along his Sensational Animal Magnetism Apparatus. The debate will be interspersed with 18th century musical interludes, including music by Leclair, Edelmann, Piccini, Gluck, Chevalier Marie Robert de Leaumont and Chevalier Saint-George, performed by the REBEL Baroque ensemble, comprising musicians Jörg-Michael Schwarz and Karen Marie Marmer, violin, Thomas Rink, violin and viola, John Moran, cello and Dongsok Shin, harpsicord asd well as sopranos Meri Siirala and Päivi Kantola, Hannu Vasara and Meri Kinnarinen, violin, Laura Kajander-Fiestas, viola, Lea Pekkala, cello, Eberhard Maldfeld, double bass, Soile Ylivuori,flute, Jasu Moisio, oboe, Annu Salminen, horn and Marja Rumpunen, piano forte.
